               (FFCS) dataset.

<Document overview>

     Acknowledges the contributors to the FFCS. Indicates data
     sources and compilation organizations.

<Project author>

     The FFCS project was initiated and largely carried through
     by Terry Rock. While with the Wildlife Branch, Terry spent
     innumerable hours organizing and directing the fire record
     filtering and entry process. Wildlife Branch maintains the
     responsibility for the dataset.

<Data sources>

     The FFCS project has hinged upon the fire records gathered
     during the various incarnations of the Department. These
     records were handled by innumerable people: field staff in
     district offices, Forest Fire Management Branch personnel,
     and Forestry Branch employees. The hard copy burn map
     sources are:

     1) 1945-1971 and 1977-1994
          Forest Fire Management Branch maps at various scales,
          typically between 1:50,000 and 1:250,000.

     2) 1972-1976
          Forestry Branch 1:million provincial fire overview.
          (Source maps at larger scales were unavailable).

     3) 1995 and on
          Forest Fire Management Branch, primarily at 1:250,000 but.
          some 1:50,000 maps and forest inventory maps at 1:12,500.
          Some boundaries delineated using GPS receivers in aircraft.

     4) Miscellaneous - Category A
          Forestry Branch canvassed its staff for fires that may
          have been missed in an earlier version of the FFCS
          dataset. Based on that survey, Forestry Branch provided
          1:250,000 maps of the following fires:

               1961 - Bertwell (year of fire uncertain)
               1961 - (two name unknowns, 1961-003 and 1961-020)
               1968 - Armstrong
               1970 - McCusker
               1980 - Kennedy Creek
               1991 - Scorcher
               1992 - Trolly
               1993 - Thursday

     5) Miscellaneous - Category B.
          Various maps that surfaced from other sources were
          added to the dataset. For example, the "Weitzel" and
          "Lansdowne" fire boundaries for 1973 were provided by
          Martin Chartier (via Mickey Desjarlais of the SERM
          "Buffalo Narrows Fire Centre").

<Digital data compilation>

     All of the data design work and dataset documentation was
     performed by Wildlife Branch. The vast majority of the
     digital compilation of the fire maps was performed by
     Wildlife Branch. Listing of digital compilation authors is
     presented via burn year groupings:

     1) 1945-1971, 1977-1994, and 1996
          Wildlife Branch (linework and attributes)

     2) 1972-76
          Forestry Branch (linework), and Wildlife Branch
          (attributes)

     3) 1995
          Forestry Branch:
             - most "project" fires in the commercial forest,
               some in the far north
             - linework, and basic attributes
          Wildlife Branch
             - fires not digitized by Forestry Branch above,
               including all linework and all attributes
             - attributes for project fires not recorded by
               Forestry Branch

Revisions:

April 10, 1997
  - corrected time frame for <Data sources> class (1) from
    "1945-1971 and 1977-1995" to "1945-1971 and 1977-1994"
  - inserted "1995 and on" <Data sources> category and incremented
    category numbers for the two miscellaneous categories by one.
  - renamed the two miscellaneous data category types in <Data sources>
    from 1 and 2 to A and B.
